£12m player sends transfer message to Newcastle and Aston Villa

Jacob Murphy has urged Matt Targett to sign a contract with Newcastle United, following his successful loan spell from Aston Villa.

The left-back posted on instagram “what a month we’ve had”, as Newcastle ended the season with a win at Burnley on Sunday.

Targett moved to St James’ Park on loan during the January transfer window and will return to Villa colors this summer.

But it looks like his £12m teammate (Air Sports) up north wants him to stay, as Murphy posted in the “I love you” comments section. Sign the ting’.

Nonetheless, that was the message Targett sent to the fans, following the end of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

Steven Gerrard added Lucas Digne to his ranks in January which pushed Targett behind the Frenchman at Villa Park.

It’s what led to the Englishman’s move to St James’ Park and it will be interesting if they knock for his services, for good, when the transfer window reopens.

The problem for Targett is that Digne is Gerrard’s signature, and given the player’s form, he won’t be getting ahead of him any time soon.

From a squad depth perspective, this is great news for Villa as they have two high-quality players to choose from at left-back.

But will Targett want to play second fiddle to Digne? Maybe not, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he left.
