Aston Villa set to win race for Oxlade-Chamberlain after update

Aston Villa could beat Man United to the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as Liverpool look to cash in this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider on the future of the midfield.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield.

An Aston Villa source said Football Insider on June 11 that Aston Villa are interested in signing Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

According talkSPORTfrom Alex Crook (June 10), Man United are also preparing a surprise offer for the 28-year-old to strengthen their midfield.

A Villa source has also told this site that they believe their ambitions, financial muscle and the appeal of Anfield legend Gerrard could help propel them into pole position to clinch a deal.

“With Gerrard’s connections, who knows?” Kenny said Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Like I say, Liverpool and Man United aren’t really rivals anymore. Historically yes, but they’re not challenging each other at the moment.

“This agreement [with Aston Villa] could easily come off. They have money, don’t they?

“It would be a good signing for them if they could do that.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain have dropped out of the pecking order at Anfield of late and have recorded a total of 1,526 minutes from their 29 appearances in all competitions in 2021-22.

He joined the club from Arsenal in the summer of 2017 and made 133 appearances.
