Child dies after shooting himself in East Nashville apartment, father wanted for questioning

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WKRN) – The two-year-old seriously injured after shooting himself in an apartment complex has died, Metro police say.

Police said detectives were still looking for her father, Jeffery Thorpe, who is wanted for questioning. Thorpe is also wanted on outstanding unrelated arrest warrants and an outstanding aggravated assault warrant for allegedly pointing a handgun at a car occupied by the toddler and his mother during an argument in June.

The shooting took place in the 2000 block of Oakwood Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Monday. The child’s mother told police Thorpe was visiting and laid a gun on a bed. The toddler then allegedly picked up the pistol and fired it, hitting him on the head.

Thorpe drove the toddler and his mother to TriStar Skyline Medical Center where he dropped them off and did not return, police said.

The weapon used in the shooting has not yet been found.
