Dispute over ‘unclean apartment’ leads to gunshot

City of Salina, New York – The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office reports that a person was arrested after firing a handgun during an argument.

On July 3, at approximately 1:10 p.m., deputies responded to the 100 block of Garden City Drive for a reported call of “gunshots.” Deputies along with members of the New York State Police arrived at the scene where they quickly determined that two adult males had been in a verbal argument, which led to one displaying a handgun and to shoot a bullet in the air.

A subsequent investigation by Sheriff Detectives revealed that a 19-year-old Nazae Mattice of 106 Garden City Drive Apartment 3-C, fired a shot into the air with a handgun during an argument verbally with a 57-year-old roommate. Mattice was charged with 2nd degree criminal use of a firearm, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 1st degree reckless endangerment and 4th degree criminal possession of stolen property.

He was arraigned in the centralized arraignment court on bond set at $100,000 cash – $200,000 bail. The handgun, which was thrown away by Mattice before deputies arrived, was picked up by a neighbor, who hid the gun in her apartment. That neighbor has been identified as Tina Atkinson, 55, of 106 Garden City Drive Apartment 4-D. She was charged with felony possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree and tampering with evidence. She was also arraigned in the centralized arraignment court, where she was released on her own recognizance.

No injuries were reported and the dispute appears to have started over an unsanitary apartment.

The handgun was found to have been stolen from the state of Virginia.
