Rangers striker Rory Wilson is set to complete the transfer from Aston Villa

Rory Wilson’s move from Rangers to Aston Villa is set to be completed on Saturday July 2 according to The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell.

The 16-year-old underwent his medical at Villa on Thursday June 30 ahead of a deal worth £350,000 which could rise to £1m.

Campbell reported via his staff Twitter account On Friday, July 1, the young striker will travel to Birmingham to finalize a move to Steven Gerrard’s side, where he will initially play for Villa’s Under-23 side.

It’s a shame for Rangers to lose one of their most sought-after talents, with the 16-year-old striker attracting attention while playing for the Gers youth teams.

The sad reality of losing players to Premier League sides isn’t just for first-team players.

The lure of playing at the top English level, along with the money on offer south of the border, often means players can’t pass up the opportunity to leave Ibrox.

Rangers have had plenty of success at their academy in recent years, and then Gers really should do more to stop players like Wilson leaving the club before they’ve even had an impact on the first team.

Realistically, Wilson would have had a much better chance of playing first-team football had he stayed at Ibrox.

Young players need to play regular first-team football if they want to develop and really play at the highest level.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see Wilson loaned out by Villa in the coming years for the youngster to gain more experience.

Rangers need to try harder to convince young players like Wilson to stay at Ibrox.
