SANDPOINT, Idaho — A new 84-unit apartment complex in Ponderay will provide much-needed housing for Schweitzer employees.

Schweitzer, in partnership with Eastmark Capital Group, will open the complex near the intersection of Schweitzer Plaza Drive and Triangle Drive in Ponderay. The location is within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and transportation services, including the public shuttle to Schweitzer.

The first phase of the housing project consists of three three-storey buildings with a central courtyard. The buildings are pet-friendly, feature modern amenities, offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, as well as bicycle and ski storage.

The $22 million housing development has received approval from the City of Ponderay, with construction beginning this spring. Completion of the full project is expected within 12 months, with employees occupying the units as early as summer 2023.

“Employee housing has been a focus of our attention for several years,” said Tom Chasse, President and CEO of Schweitzer. “Being able to provide our dedicated staff and their families with a place to call home is a huge win for them and for us. Our managers and frontline staff are the people who make Schweitzer, Schweitzer and being able to help them continue to live at the heart of our community is extremely important to all of us.

Future plans for the site include additional accommodations, covered picnic areas, outdoor play areas, walking trails, exercise facilities and a full-service daycare center.

This is Schweitzer’s second project directly related to employee housing. The resort acquired and renovated a former assisted living facility in Sandpoint in the summer of 2020, creating dormitory-style accommodations for 16 employees.
