Villa fans reportedly hailed Axel Witsel as an outright coup

Aston Villa fans have reportedly hailed the signing of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel as an outright coup, say Express & Star reporter Luke Hatfield.

Witsel was linked with a surprise move to Villa at the end of the summer transfer window, with an Italian outlet Tuttosport claiming that Juventus, AS Roma and the Midlands club are all interested in signing the Belgian.

Witsel has remained at Dortmund, however, and will now seek to help Marco Rose’s side end Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga.

Had the 32-year-old signed for Villa, Hatfield is certain he would have been a welcome addition.

“Witsel would obviously have adapted to the position that Villa probably had to address”, Hatfield said FFC. “But he’s not the youngest in the world and he’s just come out of a very serious Achille injury.

“Obviously he would have been an incredible signing for the fans and the fans would have been right behind. On paper it would still look good, but in practice I’m not too sure. But Villa fans would have hailed it as a real coup.

While Villa didn’t end up signing a midfielder like Witsel, it has to be said that it was still a pretty successful transfer window for the Premier League side.

Yes, they lost Jack Grealish to Manchester City, but they still managed to make some big offensive additions after signing Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey.
