Witness reports explosion as firefighters battle blaze and find fireworks in apartment building – Reuters

As they battled the blaze, there was an explosion that sent crews and neighbors scrambling, a witness said.

“It was a big explosion,” said Gus Guzman, who has lived in the apartment complex for 12 years. “Firefighters were taking cover.”

Officials could not immediately confirm the cause of the fire or explosion, but they did confirm that firefighters found fireworks on the second floor of the building.

The flames started around 8:23 a.m. in the 3900 block of Allin Street, which is next to the Belmont Brewing Company near the Belmont Pier.

When Long Beach fire crews arrived on the scene, they witnessed a fire originating from the third floor of the building and additional personnel were requested, LBFD spokesman Jake Heflin said.

The fire was extinguished around 8:48 a.m., Heflin said. He could not immediately confirm whether anyone had been injured in the fire.

Firefighters also responded to the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
